Why Do Email Signatures Sometimes Break in Replies?

Your signature can look broken in a reply because the recipient's email client changes your original message when it quotes it. Some clients strip out formatting code or remove images from quoted text. This happens on their side, and your original email always arrives with the signature intact.

Why does this happen?

When someone replies and includes your original message, their email client rebuilds that message as quoted text. Depending on the client, that can mean:

  • Removing or rewriting parts of the HTML that controls your signature's layout
  • Dropping images, or turning them into attachments
  • Applying its own fonts and spacing

The result can be a shifted layout, oversized icons or missing images further down the thread.

Is something wrong with my signature?

No. It depends on the software the other person uses to reply, so you can't fully prevent it from your side. It doesn't affect the emails you send: each new message, and each reply you write, goes out with your full signature.

Can I reduce the problem?

  • Keep your signature simple. The Basic layout and fewer images hold up better when quoted. See how to change your layout.
  • Make sure your signature is installed correctly in your own email client, since problems in your outgoing signature also show up in replies.
