Why Does It Say My Text Is Too Long When Saving?

The "is too long" error means one of your signature fields is over 255 characters, which is the maximum htmlsig allows for each field. Shorten the field named in the error message and save again. If the error comes from your email client instead, your signature has too much content for that client and you need to slim it down.

If htmlsig shows the error when you save

The editor shows a message at the top like "Website is too long (maximum is 255 characters)". These fields each have a 255-character limit:

  • On the Main tab: name, job title, email, mobile phone, office phone, fax, company name, website, address and address line 2
  • On the Social tab: the Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Vimeo, Pinterest, Dribbble, Flickr, 500px and Skype links
  • On the Banner tab: the banner link URL

To fix it:

  1. Check the error message to see which field is too long.
  2. Shorten it. For long links, remove tracking parameters (everything after ?, such as ?utm_source=…) or use your profile's short URL.
  3. Save again.

Your disclaimer isn't limited to 255 characters, so it won't trigger this error.

If your email client says the signature is too long

Some email clients limit how much content a signature can have. Signatures with lots of social icons, a long disclaimer or several buttons can go over that limit. Try these, in order:

  1. Copy the signature from the Open in New Tab window on your signature page, so no extra page code gets copied with it.
  2. Use fewer social icons.
  3. Shorten or remove your disclaimer.
  4. Switch to the Basic layout on the Style tab, which uses less code than the other layouts.
  5. Remove anything else you don't need, like extra buttons or badges.
